a merry surprise

He totally makes me smile.

This morning, while reading my favorite blogs, Husband burst through the door with a huge noble.  He was supposedly on his way to the beach to help his dad, but he decided to surprise us with a tree before his departure.  You've never seen a tree come barreling through door, thrown to the floor, shortened and up in a tree stand as fast has Husband can do it.  He can totally get 'er done, and make a wife happy!

And we're so thankful we don't have to wait till next week to make it merry around here!

I've always found him especially attractive with a tool in hand.

An Anniversary Hunt

We don't get out much.  Not with two little ones at least.  I know there are all sorts of folks who juggle children and adventures simultaneously with much grace, but in our family, Husband and I can only handle so much.  Thus is the same reason we haven't traveled hardly anywhere since we married and began having children.  We reflect fondly on our honeymoon, spent in NYC, five long years ago.  I'd show you some pictures, but our computer was stolen during a move some years back, before I ever thought to back up photos.  I cried that day.  However, I do have one shot sitting on my nightstand, and it is perhaps the best shot--hence the reason I framed it.

So this year, with the big five on the horizon, and unable to fathom leaving our children and flying cross-country to celebrate in the Big Apple, (though we dreamed of doing so) we opted for something much more memory worthy, and far from our past years' sushi dinners.

This is what I'm talking about.

Some of you are probably wondering if this is serious?
But I'll just tell ya, there are some things you do when you're in love.

Husband is an avid hunter, and comes from a long family-line of hunters.
This year was his first since we've had children that he's been able to get away as much as he's wanted and hunt to his heart's content.  He got himself a buck on Halloween, and I can't wait to tell you more about it.
It is pretty interesting what these hunters go through to hunt animals, recover them, and harvest them.
Husband takes great pride in this process, so it was with much excitement that I was able to learn a few things before and during Friday's hunt.

Thursday, we went to the shooting range.
Yay!  I can cross something off my list,
and good news!  I have a good shot.  I felt all the more ready for my rookie hunt.

Friday it was early rise--4:15am and out the door at 5am.
Husband's hunting buddies drove with us up into the mountains,
where we departed our separate ways by 7am.

It was quite adventurous.
I felt a bit like a female version of Rambo, as Husband insisted I lead the way, rifle-ready.

I think my subconscious may have prayed that we wouldn't see anything.

Husband was quite handsome with his binoculars.

The views were incredible.
What beautiful country surrounds us.

As you can see, the loggers have been at work.
Still beautiful nonetheless.

After we hiked up and through the clearing,
we headed for the trees.
It is there, Husband taught me, that the deer hide.
It was a cold, and at times rainy morning,
so the deer, like humans, take cover under the trees.
The hunt took on a new level of adventure once we entered the dense forest.
The trees hung low in places, often requiring us to crouch or duck under.
There was snow on the ground in places, too, that we had no choice but to walk over at times.
We did our best to be as quiet as possible.

Husband told me before our trip, that this experience would be perfect for me,
"because it was just my pace--slow."
And it was.  Slow and quiet.  It was quite intriguing.

We followed the prints for some time:

{a buck}

and prints I wanted nothing to do with:

{a coyote}

Me with my hat up so I could hear more closely.

A couple hours into the hunt, we came across Husband's hunting partner, Rickey, in the woods.

We continued on as a group, and for a moment we stopped to listen intently
to Rickey's calls and any other commotion.
He even pulled a couple of antlers from his vest and hit them together, so as to call in another deer.
Things got pretty intense for a few minutes, as we heard some noise through the trees,
but never did we see an animal.

Personally, I wouldn't have had it any other way.
I'd like to get to the shooting range a few more times before I come face to face with an animal.
I think my heart may have near bulged out of my chest if I actually saw one.
Deer really can be quite large, and Elk, they are far too huge for my comfort zone.

We called it a day after our PB & J's for lunch.
I fell asleep in the warm truck, and again as we headed down the mountain for home.
Husband told me he's never had a hunting partner need a nap mid-day,
but I still believe I am his most favorite hunting partner ever.
It was a blast being together in the great outdoors, doing the thing that Husband loves,
and learning from him on our special day.

In the evening, we had dinner at our favorite, local Italian eatery in downtown Camas,
and settled in early with tea and a movie.
All in all, it was a perfect anniversary, and the adventurous memories make for perfect segue into this next portion of our journey together.

Husband, cheers to many, many more years!

five years ago today...

I married my best friend,
the one who I adore,
and the one who makes me happier than I ever imagined I could be.

Husband, thank you for sharing in this journey with me.
There is never a dull moment between us,
and for this I am lucky.
You've shown me unconditional love,
and for this I am blessed.
You've given me endless encouragement and support to seek,
strive and reach for my dreams,
and for this I am truly grateful.

Thank you.
Because of all these things, I know love.

Here's to the next five...and to an awesome anniversary weekend!

my man can decorate a cake.

It is true.  And it's not the first time.

The latest cake comes on the heels of an engagement!

Our little brother Timmy, caught himself a keeper!
He proposed on the Washougal River, here in Camas,
while he and his perused the early morning waters in their waders.

Luckily, the river was high that special September morn,
and not one caught a fish...
except for Timmy, of course.

Aimee!!!  Welcome to the McCully clan!
We're so glad you're hooked and a keeper!
Tim is lucky to have you and we think you're lovely.

We are so excited about the engagement, that we celebrated last weekend,
and ate a fish cake!

Here is the evolution of the fish cake.

Husband is an artist and builder of many things...
in wood, ink and cake {to name a few}.

No tracing here.  Nope.  Just a vision.

It was realized early, that cutting and decorating the likes of a salmon fish
would be pushing our luck.  Whimsy it was.

Husband even added a little oomph to the middle section
to give the belly curvature.

Lotsa corn starch!  Possibly too much!

He insisted this eye be "bugged."  I thought we might be eyeless by the end of the night,
but she held up!

I love the beaded outlining he chose.

and of course the newly-engageds' names.

Besides a couple minor cracks and bumps, the fondant cooperated,
and Husband prevailed.

Husband receives an A+ in my book
and with all the party goers!

There were some of these, too, in the same flavors as the cake.

Carrot for him.
Vanilla for her.

{with cream Cheese frosting, of course}.

Hope your Friday is great!

P.S. I'm linking up to Joyce's Friday Pretties!  Go see the other pretty things here.

A Birthday Adventure

This last weekend, we celebrated Husband's 29th birthday!!

Because his birthday falls during the glorious heat of the summer, there is no other way that Husband would rather celebrate his turning one year older than with camping, fishing and family. In fact, these things are the essence of his manhood; the things that make him the wonderful man he is.  Not to mention, what a great time everyone has doing these things--with him.

He's a true outdoorsman, and I just love this about him.
He's the life of the party, and the most generous person I know.
If anyone isn't having fun, he isn't having it.
He exudes happiness, fearlessness and adventure.
He is adventure.

And even though he married himself a newbie-outdoors-woman,
he still loves me.
Even though this last weekend was my first encounter with a worm,
he still loves me,
and smiles at me a lot.
He laughs a little, too.
But he tells me I'm tough, and that I am the very best,
and that he loves me,
and it is all that matters.

He is a wonderful father and teacher.
His daughter finds safety in him,
and has no issue with worms.
His son wants to drive his truck,
and be just like him.
She has his energy, his kindness, and outgoing spirit.
He has his strength, sillyness, and loving affection.

All in all, our life is more than I could have hoped for.
I thank God every day for binding our family in love and faith.
I thank Husband for his unmeasurable love and support that
he gives to our family each day.

Albert Philippi Park-John Day, Oregon
He is tireless.
He is ambitious.
He's an entrepreneur.
He's a force to be reckoned with.
He's a man of God.

I LOVE my outdoorsman.

Here's to another adventurous year!
xoxo

I could never say enough good things about him.

I Married a True Outdoorsman

The poetry of the earth is never dead. ~John Keats

Tomorrow morning around five a.m., Husband will wake and get ready for his hunt. He'll gather his camo, burlap shades, his call, orange beanie, pocket knife and rifle and a steaming cup of coffee and jump into his Dodge to head for the mountains. He'll set out into the deep, lush wilderness, not far from our home, quietly listening and stalking the illusive.

It's adventures like these that have shaped the man. His loyalty to the wilderness is vast and his respect of the hunt runs deep. He feels proud to live off the land in even the slightest way. He is even prouder to feed his family.

As I have mentioned before, it's days like these that I would wish upon Husband regularly if I could. When he has the chance to escape into the woods or down to the river, something happens inside of him that penetrates. It's as if the very air is God's breath and the trees His long arms, welcoming Husband into the mystery and the beauty that He has created. Husband always returns from such days with a peace and a quiet that only an outdoorsman would know--and love.

The Hunt of 2006

Husband and the Sharratt Boys
(This is no small Elk! He made two record books that year! He was taken out in one shot with a Long Bow by Rickie--the man on the right.)

“You must write every single day of your life... You must lurk in libraries and climb the stacks like ladders to sniff books like perfumes and wear books like hats upon your crazy heads... may you be in love every day for the next 20,000 days. And out of that love, remake a world.” ― Ray Bradbury
